Haken was a wrestling position that involved entwining your leg with your opponent’s leg in order to set up trips and throws. Variations of Haken appear commonly in traditional wrestling styles around the world. While present in other medieval wrestling sources, Haken techniques are most prevalent in Fabian von Auerswald’s wrestling manuscript – taking up roughly 1/3 of the 85 technique treatise. This class will explore the benefits of utilizing Haken while wrestling, and introduce participants to a variety of techniques that flow naturally from the position.
